Gurukul Kanvashram  -  Where Divinity meets the World
For centuries tourists have visited Kanvashram to seek divine peace and solitude. Kanvashram is truly "Paradise on Earth". A sublime feeling of entering Heaven dawns upon you as the journey from Haridwar approaches Kanvashram. The atmosphere is filled with positive vibrations and purity, left behind by the thousands of years of intense meditation (tapasya) done by saints and maharishis at Kanvashram. A unique sense of tranquility and the flow of positive energy through the body can be felt instantly. The sounds of the pristine waters of River Malini hurtling down the mighty Himalayas can bind you in an entrancing spell. (The water of River Malini has therapeutic properties that can heal stomach and skin ailments.)
The spring water which runs down the Himalayas is pollution free and crystal clear. The herbs and medicinal plants that grow on the slopes of Himalayas enrich the water with minerals, making it perfectly healthy for human consumption. The wise sage Maharishi Kanva and many other Rishis chose this land to settle and called it "God’s Land" because of its sublime purity.
Gurukul Kanvashram has an enviable reputation as a top-notch Yoga and Ayurveda Centre located in cradle of Mother Nature, the forests of Garhwal, the picturesque Shivalik Hills, right at the foothills of the Himalayan range. The serene atmosphere full of pristine air energizes the body and vitalizes the soul that makes Kanvashram a perfect Retreat for anyone who wants a healthy, stress-free life. The weather through all the six seasons is mild and moderate.
Kanvashram is an ideal place for Ayurvedic Panchakarma, because it gets adequate heat in summer from sunrays for sun-bathing, which is essential for effective treatment. In fact, Nature has bestowed Kanvashram in abundance with the five elements essential for human life namely Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether.
The system of five elements are found in Vedas especially Ayurveda the pancha mahabhuta, or "five great elements" of Hinduism are Bhoomi (earth), Jal (water), Tejas or Agni (fire), Marut or Pawan (air or wind), Vyom or Shunya or Akash (ether or void) They further suggest that all of creation, including the human body, is made up of these five essential elements and that upon death, the human body dissolves into these five elements of nature, thereby balancing the cycle of nature.
According to one of the principal texts of Hindu philosophy, the Tattwa Kaumudi authored by Vachaspati in the 9th century A.D., the Creator used akasha (ether), the most "subtle" element, to create the other four traditional elements; each element created is in turn used to create the next element, each less subtle than the last. The five elements are associated with the five senses, and act as the gross medium for the experience of sensations. The basest element, earth, created using all the other elements, can be perceived by all five senses  -  hearing, touch, sight, taste, and smell. The next higher element, water, has no odor but can be heard, felt, seen and tasted. Next is fire, which can be heard, felt and seen. Air can be heard and felt. "Akasha" (ether) is the medium of sound but is inaccessible to all other senses.

Kanvashram  -  Holy & Historical significance
A Siddh Peeth of Rishi Kanva, Kanvashram is a holy land where Rishis or Sages like Vishwamitra and Kanva meditated for several years. Surrounded by the serene natural beauty and forest, Kanvashram has its existence since 5500 years. As per legend, Sage Viswamitra’s intense meditation made King of Gods, Indra feel insecure. Indra, then sent heavenly damsel Menaka to distract Rishi Vishwamitra. Menaka succeeded in disrupting Vishwamitra’s meditation and subsequently gave birth to a daughter, Shakuntala. Both the parents left little Shakuntala in the care of Rishi Kanva, who performed long meditation at the ashram. Thus, the place got the name Kanv-ashram.
After Shakuntala grew up, she married Dushyant, King of Hastinapur and gave birth to a son, Bharat on the banks of River Malini. A small temple exists where Bharat was born. Bharat grew up and studied in Kanvashram. Our country was named Bharat after him.
Nearby local attractions include Malini barrage, Sahastradhara Falls, Bharat Temple, Siddhbali Temple, Durga Temple, AamDali, Sher Ghaati, Sitamuth, BrahmKund, Lansdowne, Pauri, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri etc.
Kanvashram celebrates the first day of spring, "Vasantotsav" a 5-day festival with great pomp and gaiety.
Kanvashram is 14 kms from Gate of Garhwal - Kothdwar and is well connected by road.
